Recovering From Identity Theft

“Your identity is your most valuable possession. Protect it” - ElastiGirl, The Incredibles

Stealing is a crime, regardless of the monetary value large or small. If you steal a piece of gum or one-million dollars, while the penalty will be different, if you stole it, you’re a thief. Imagine what happens to the person who had their items stolen? The violation and injustice felt. Multiply that by someone assuming your identity, and stealing that for their benefit.

What is identity theft? Identity theft happens when someone steals your personal information to commit fraud. The identity thief may use your information to apply for lines of credit, file taxes under your name to receive a refund, and/or get medical services for themselves. These acts can damage your credit status, and cost you time and money to restore your good name & credit.

How do I protect myself? Being safe online (and all around) is the first step to making sure your identity stays safe. When you are browsing websites and decide to make a purchase, make sure you are on a secure browser before you enter any of your personal identifying information. Also, you should be reviewing your accounts at a minimum once per week to reconcile your spending and account balances.

What happens if I discover something awry? You should follow the steps listed on The Federal Trade Commissions Identity Theft site (identitytheft.gov).

Be safe all around.
